Multnomah Village's December Runs Through the Arts Center on Capitol Highway

The low-slung building at 7688 SW Capitol Highway sits at the west end of Multnomah Village. Most weeks it's where people go for a pottery class or to drop off a kid. In the first week of December it becomes the busiest address in the Village. That's partly because of what happens inside, and partly because the street party on SW 35th Avenue is scheduled around it.

This year the timing is tight. The Multnomah Arts Center's Winter Arts & Crafts Sale and the Multnomah Village Business Association's Holiday Gala overlap on the evening of Friday, Dec. 4. The arts center itself also spent the fall taking on a bigger role in the neighborhood. If you live within walking distance of Capitol Highway, that building is the place to plan your December around.

Three days, one overlapping evening

The Multnomah Arts Center Association schedules its winter sale on a fixed rule: three days, starting the Thursday before the first Friday in December. The first Friday this year is Dec. 4, so the sale runs Thursday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 5. The Columbia Basin Basketry Guild's 2026 calendar lists its own Dec. 5 event at 7688 SW Capitol Hwy as part of the sale, which confirms the dates.

Here's how the three days stack up against the street event:

  1. Thursday, Dec. 3: The arts center sale opens at 9 a.m. and runs to 9 p.m. Nothing else is scheduled outside, so Thursday is the quiet day to shop.
  2. Friday, Dec. 4: The sale is open again from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., the MVBA Holiday Gala takes over SW 35th Avenue with a community tree lighting and sing-along, photos with Santa, an appearance by the Grinch, and live music. For those three hours, the arts center and the street are both drawing crowds.
  3. Saturday, Dec. 5: The sale wraps up with shorter hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The gala's own listing names the arts center's crafts fair as one of its attractions, so the business association builds its biggest night of the year with the sale in mind. You can treat the evening as one loop: the tree on 35th, a few blocks along Capitol, the crafts tables at the arts center, and back.

Where the money from the crafts tables goes

The sale is built around local handmade work, and its split is unusual for a holiday market. According to the arts center association, artists keep 65% of each sale and the remaining 35% goes to programs at the Multnomah Arts Center.

That means a purchase on Dec. 3, 4 or 5 does two local things. Most of the money goes to the maker. The rest goes back into the classes and studios at 7688 SW Capitol Hwy, the same building where many neighbors already spend their weekday evenings. It's a small detail, and it explains why the sale has a permanent spot on the Village calendar.

The arts center spent the fall pulling more of the neighborhood in

The December crowd is the visible part of a fall-long shift. Two changes since September have tied the arts center more closely to the business district around it.

The first is a new tenant. Southwest Portland Martial Arts announced in a Sept. 1 post that it had moved into the Multnomah Arts Center, with access from the rear parking lot off SW 31st. A later open-house notice on the Multnomah Neighborhood Association's site placed the school in the arts center's west wing. More classes in the building mean more people walking in and out of the Village on weeknights, holiday season or not.

The second was a deliberate test run for the kind of evening that's coming on Dec. 4. On Oct. 16, Portland Parks & Recreation held a free Arts for All open house at the arts center with about 15 hands-on activities. Village businesses were invited to offer specials and extended hours that night, and a guided walk took visitors past the Village's murals. According to the Multnomah Neighborhood Association's events page, Art in the Village, working with the neighborhood association and the MVBA, has helped bring several new murals to the neighborhood over the past year, with more planned.

The arts center draws people in, and the shops along Capitol Highway and SW 35th stay open late to catch them on the way out.

What changed on Capitol Highway before the crowds arrive

If your last walk through the Village was in late summer, a few things along Capitol and nearby streets are different now.

  • Overflow Coffee, 7650 SW Capitol Hwy. Kynzey Martini, whom regulars may know from Lost & Found Coffee, opened her own cafe in the Village this fall. Bridgetown Bites reported that it has been "very well-received." It sits a short walk from the arts center, which makes it the closest new coffee stop for a Thursday morning at the sale.
  • ZINC Bistro & Bar, 7800 SW Capitol Hwy. The restaurant is changing hands. According to the same Bridgetown Bites roundup, owner Jane Kifer will step away after Dec. 23, and manager Tom Moore takes over ownership on Jan. 1, 2027. Moore is also known for his events work with the Multnomah Village Business Association. So ZINC's last holiday season under its current owner is also the one the incoming owner helps put on for the whole Village.
  • Village Pickle, 3675 SW Troy St. Village Pickle is a pickleball and food cart venue in a converted 1950s-era post office in Multnomah Village. KGW, reporting for the Portland Business Journal, described zoning changes, new walls and a rebuilt sewer system as part of the conversion. The venue's site describes three indoor courts, a full bar and food carts. Farmer and the Beast told Bridgetown Bites in October that it was preparing a cart there.

The season around the weekend

The Dec. 3 to 5 window is the peak, and the business association has events on both sides of it.

Golden Tickets, Nov. 27 to Dec. 31. The MVBA calls this shopping promotion a "Multnomah Village & Hillsdale community favorite for over a decade." Buy at least a set amount at a participating business and you get a Golden Ticket. You then redeem it at a different participating business for a discount or a gift with purchase. Each business sets its own minimum and its own offer. The setup pushes each purchase toward a second shop, which suits a weekend when people are already walking between the arts center and the street. This year's gold sponsors are Paloma Clothing, Annie Bloom's Books, Marco's Cafe, Indigo Traders, Verde Cocina, City Thai and JP General. Details are on the Golden Tickets 2026 page.

Hanukkah celebration, Dec. 10. Six days after the gala, the Village gathers again. The MVBA's listing places it at The Butterfly Effect, 7829 SW Capitol Hwy, from 4 to 6 p.m., with pottery painting, a klezmer band and traditional foods. Candle lighting happens at the traffic triangle at SW 35th and SW Capitol just before 6 p.m. That's the same intersection the gala uses, so the corner hosts a second community gathering in less than a week.

Here are the dates in one place:

Date Event Where
Nov. 27 to Dec. 31 Golden Tickets Participating Village and Hillsdale businesses
Thu., Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Winter Arts & Crafts Sale opens Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy

If you're picking one stretch to block off, the evening of Friday, Dec. 4 has the tree lighting on 35th and the crafts tables at the arts center, both open at the same time a few blocks apart.
